I am on the move again and traveling through the Northern Territory. I do like traveling during this period as it is coming to the end of the tourist season. The hoards of caravans have gone, but the entertainment continues in the Roadhouses plus you don’t have to book in advance.
In Australia, the roadhouses, homesteads, and Parks offer in-house singers for tourist season.
I was in this same zone this time last year, but this year, it is extraordinarily hot. The heat has definitely come earlier, with temperatures in the mid-30s Celsius (96-98 F).
I have been traveling along the Stuart Highway down the center of the NT. This is a long, challenging road. There are few stops along the way, and often little to see. Finally, getting to Mataranka was a godsend.
Mataranka is a small town on the Stuart Highway. It is nestled about 420 kilometers southeast of Darwin and 1000km from Alice Springs. I came from Queensland this time, so it’s only 550km from the turnoff at Three Ways. This is the ultimate stop. If you’re looking for an escape that offers stunning landscapes and the relaxation of natural hot springs, Mataranka should be at the top.

Mataranka’s crown jewels are its stunning natural springs—Bitter Springs and Mataranka Springs. These pristine waterholes are beautiful and imbued with therapeutic qualities, making them a must-visit for anyone seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.

Bitter Springs is a hidden oasis where you can float effortlessly in warm, crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. The spring’s water maintains a pleasant temperature of around 34°C (93°F) year-round, providing a soothing experience whether you’re visiting in the heat of summer or the cooler months. The gentle current allows you to drift leisurely, soaking in the tranquility of this natural wonder.
HOT TIP: Take your floaty noodle and just chill while the slow current takes you down the springs. From the dusty road and the long drive down the Stuart, I swear this is as close to Paradise as it gets.
Mataranka Springs is 7kms off the Stuart Highway. It is well signposted. I stayed at the Mataranka Homestead, located within the Elsey National Park. These springs are renowned for their vivid blue water and scenic surroundings. The springs’ warm waters, also at a consistent 34°C, offer a relaxing soak amid a serene setting of palm trees and native flora. It’s a perfect spot for families, couples, or solo travelers to unwind and connect with nature.
When I was there, the parks were doing track repairs. There was a detour to Stevies Hole, another swimming spot. As I did not have enough water with me to do this hike in the heat, I didn’t get to see it. I went to the information center to get water, and the lady said, DON’T go there as there are Crocs!!
HOT TIP: Check with the information center before you start and DON’T RANDOMLY SWIM in the NT waterways!
Katherine Hot Springs
The Hot Springs is nestled in the town of Katherine, in the Northern Territory. This is a true oasis for travelers seeking relaxation and natural beauty.
