Top 7 Things to Do in Babinda

1. Explore the Babinda Boulders

Swim in the designated swimming area

Babinda’s history intertwines deeply with Aboriginal culture, evident in local legends and significant sites like the Babinda Boulders. According to local Aboriginal legend, Oolana, a young Yidinji woman, haunts the site after throwing herself into the waters when her forbidden love was discovered. Her spirit remains in the boulders. The Babinda Boulders, surrounded by lush rainforests, attract visitors with their stunning natural beauty and large, smooth formations, making them perfect for photos.

While the Babinda Boulders are great for swimming in the designated area, it’s important to note that swimming near the actual boulders is really dangerous. Despite the calm appearance, the waters are treacherous. Several people have drowned over the years, not due to supernatural causes but because of the natural hazards present. Mother nature is unforgiving! The signs tell a sobering story of these dangers, including crevasses, caves, and drownings. I have seen posts of people taking their Insta-ready pics in the most dangerous places. That is just DUMB!

The hike to the Babinda Boulders lookout is a leisurely stroll suitable for all ages. It offers spectacular views and photo opportunities.

A short drive from Babinda, towards Cairns, is Behana Gorge Walking Track. This hidden gem offers a serene escape into nature. The hike to the gorge is moderately challenging. I only say that because it is undulating, but it is 98% paved, so it’s not too bad. Just follow the pipeline, and you’ll get there. The payoff is a series of cascading waterfalls and rock pools. This destination is perfect for hiking, swimming, and those Instagram pics.

If you are watching your weight, this may not be your stop. However, this place needs a mention, as the pies are amazing, the cream buns have fresh cream, and the coffee is good.

It’s an excellent spot to grab a bite and either eat here or take it down to the Boulders for a picnic.
