Nyiyaparli Country

Newman sits on Nyiyaparli Country in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The Nyiyaparli people have a rich history and culture and are the traditional custodians of this land. Recent excavations of rock shelter Tharri (cave) sites in the Newman area indicate that the Nyiyaparli people and their ancestors have lived here for at least 40,000 years or about 1600 generations. They have adapted to significant environmental changes, including the last ice age about 25,000 to 17,000 years ago, through the sustainable use of natural plant and animal resources. Archaeological evidence of Nyiyaparli occupation is found across the landscape in camps, rock shelters, and rock art.

Newman History

BHP Mount Whaleback Mine

Newman started as a remote outpost in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, primarily serving as a pastoral and agricultural area. Before the mining boom, farmers and cattle ranchers sparsely populated the region, tending to their livestock on expansive stations.

The discovery of vast iron ore deposits in the mid-20th century transformed Newman’s future. The Mount Newman Mining Company, a subsidiary of BHP, established the town in 1966 to support the mining operations at Mount Whaleback. This site is now one of the world’s largest open-cut iron ore mines, with iron ore deposits expected to sustain mining operations for many decades to come, potentially beyond 2050.

The iron ore found here is of high quality and rich in hematite, making it a valuable resource in steel manufacturing. After extraction, the iron ore is crushed and screened before being transported. A dedicated railway line spanning over 400 kilometers connects the mines in Newman to the port of Port Hedland. Here, the ore is loaded onto ships for export to international markets, primarily in Asia.

The Change to a Family Town

Newman rapidly expanded to accommodate the growing workforce and their families. The town saw the development of new housing, schools, and recreational facilities to support the influx of people. Today, BHP continues to be the major player in Newman, operating the massive Mount Whaleback mine. Other companies, such as Fortescue Metals Group and Rio Tinto, have significant mining interests in the broader Pilbara region.

Newman’s transformation from an isolated pastoral outpost into a dynamic mining town is remarkable. The town plays a crucial role in Australia’s mining industry, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy. Its evolution showcases the region’s rich natural resources and industrial potential, with iron ore remaining a cornerstone of economic activity and future growth.

A UHF radio is handy around these parts. It gives you plenty of warning when the big mining vehicles pass through. As a rule pull over as far left as you can. These trucks carry huge loads.

HOT TIP: I was in Newman in September 2024, heading down south to the wildflowers. The diesel is more pricey in Newman than in Port Hedland and Meekatharra, by at least 25c/ litre. Check out Petrol Spy to get the best Petrol/diesel prices while you are traveling. I downloaded the app for simplicity.
