Nyiyaparli Country

Newman sits on Nyiyaparli Country in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The Nyiyaparli people have a rich history and culture and are the traditional custodians of this land. Recent excavations of rock shelter Tharri (cave) sites in the Newman area indicate that the Nyiyaparli people and their ancestors have lived here for at least 40,000 years, or about 1600 generations. They have adapted to significant environmental changes, including the last ice age about 25,000 to 17,000 years ago, through the sustainable use of natural plant and animal resources. Archaeological evidence of Nyiyaparli occupation is found across the landscape in the form of camps, rock shelters, and rock art.

This was taken outside of Marble Bar

The Pilbara region of Western Australia, celebrated for its vast and diverse landscapes, stands as the largest shire in the world. This remote expanse encompasses arid deserts, lush gorges, and rugged mountain ranges, presenting a breathtaking mosaic of natural beauty. Home to Marble Bar, famously the hottest town in Australia, the Pilbara frequently experiences temperatures soaring above 40°C. Karijini National Park, with its dramatic red rock formations, cascading waterfalls, and deep, tranquil gorges, serves as a major tourist magnet, enticing adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Other notable attractions include the serene Millstream Chichester National Park and the unspoiled coastline along the Indian Ocean, offering stunning vistas and pristine beaches. The historic towns of Point Samson and Cossack add to the region’s charm, with Point Samson known for its beautiful beaches and excellent fishing spots, and Cossack offering a glimpse into the area’s rich history through its well-preserved 19th-century buildings. The Pilbara’s unique blend of harsh yet beautiful landscapes, combined with its rich cultural and historical sites, makes it a captivating destination for those seeking to explore one of Australia’s most remarkable regions.

The Rise of a Mining Town

Newman has a mine in the town. this is Whaleback Mine.
Whaleback Mine in Newman

Newman started as a remote outpost in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, primarily serving as a pastoral and agricultural area. Before the mining boom, farmers and cattle ranchers sparsely populated the region, tending to their livestock on expansive stations.

In the mid-20th century, the discovery of vast iron ore deposits transformed Newman’s future. The Mount Newman Mining Company, a subsidiary of BHP, established the town in 1966 to support the mining operations at Mount Whaleback. This site is now one of the largest open-cut iron ore mines in the world, with iron ore deposits expected to sustain mining operations for many decades to come, potentially beyond 2050.

The iron ore found here is of high quality, rich in hematite, making it a valuable resource in steel manufacturing. After extraction, the iron ore is crushed and screened before being transported. A dedicated railway line, spanning over 400 kilometers, connects the mines in Newman to the port of Port Hedland. Here, the ore is loaded onto ships for export to international markets, primarily in Asia.

The Change to a Family Town

Newman rapidly expanded to accommodate the growing workforce and their families. The town saw the development of new housing, schools, and recreational facilities to support the influx of people. Today, BHP continues to be the major player in Newman, operating the massive Mount Whaleback mine. Other companies, such as Fortescue Metals Group and Rio Tinto, also have significant mining interests in the broader Pilbara region.

Newman’s transformation from an isolated pastoral outpost into a dynamic mining town is remarkable. The town continues to play a crucial role in Australia’s mining industry, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy. Its evolution showcases the region’s rich natural resources and industrial potential, with iron ore remaining a cornerstone of economic activity and future growth.

Dining out – I would go to the Capricorn Bar and Grill that is down the road at the Capricorn Road House.

Exercise – I would walk the Goat Track up Radio Hill and watch the sun rise or set. Keep an eye out for the rock wallabies.

I would buy my general groceries at Woolworths and replenish the veges and meat at The Good Grocer. It is a wee bit darer but well worth it.
