Join me as we explore this charming town!

Nyiyaparli Country

Newman sits on Nyiyaparli Country in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The Nyiyaparli people have a rich history and culture and are the traditional custodians of this land. Recent excavations of rock shelter Tharri (cave) sites in the Newman area indicate that the Nyiyaparli people and their ancestors have lived here for at least 40,000 years or about 1600 generations.

They have adapted to significant environmental changes, including the last ice age about 25,000 to 17,000 years ago, through the sustainable use of natural plant and animal resources. Archaeological evidence of Nyiyaparli occupation is found across the landscape in camps, rock shelters, and rock art.

How to Get to Newman

From Perth

The quickest way to reach Newman is via National Highway 95, which takes travellers directly through the Great Northern Highway. This is the most direct route for those heading north. If you time it right, you may experience the wildflowers along this central road or the Wheatbelt’s stunning Canola fields.

From Port Hedland

Take State Route 95 (Great Northern Highway) south for about 452 km to reach Newman. This is the best route for those coming from Broome or the northwest.

From Exmouth and Ningaloo

Travellers can take National Highway 1 along the coast past Exmouth and Ningaloo Reef, then connect to Great Northern Highway (95) inland towards Newman.

Via Marble Bar & Nullagine

For those seeking an adventurous route, Route 138, a partially unsealed roadruns from Port Hedland through Marble Bar and Nullagine, offering a rugged alternative to Highway 95. However, this route is only recommended for 4WD vehicles due to rough road conditions. The road is all sealed through to Marble Bar, and then about 45 minutes past Nullagine, you hit a sealed road again.

Via Marble Bar & Aski Roadhouse (Hillside – Marble Bar Rd)

Another off-the-beaten-track way to get to Newman is via Marble Bar, taking the Hillside-Marble Bar Road to Aski Roadhouse. Again, it is only suited for 4WD vehicles as it is unsealed.

Newman History

Newman was established as a mining town in the 1960s after the discovery of vast iron ore deposits in the region. The town is named after Mount Newman, which itself was named after explorer Aubrey Woodward Newman, who perished in the area in 1896 while surveying the Pilbara.

The visitors centre has a large mining truck in its carpark reminding people of the significance of mining in Newman

The iron ore deposits were identified in the 1950s by prospector Stan Hilditch, leading to the development of what would become the Mount Whaleback Mine, the largest open-cut iron ore mine in the world. The discovery marked a turning point for the Pilbara region, transforming it into one of the world’s key mining hubs.

The town of Newman was officially built by BHP (formerly Mt. Newman Mining Co.) to support the growing workforce and mining operations. Infrastructure, housing, and amenities were rapidly developed, creating a thriving settlement in what was once a remote and harsh environment.

Today, Newman remains a vital centre for iron ore mining, with its economy deeply tied to the industry. Despite its industrial roots, the town has expanded to accommodate tourism, acting as a gateway to the breathtaking landscapes of the Pilbara and Karijini National Park.

The Change to a Family Town

Newman’s transformation from an isolated pastoral outpost into a dynamic mining town is remarkable. The city plays a crucial role in Australia’s mining industry, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy. Its evolution showcases the region’s rich natural resources and industrial potential, with iron ore remaining a cornerstone of economic activity and future growth.

HOT TIP: A UHF radio is essential around these parts. It gives you plenty of warning when the big mining vehicles pass through. As a rule, pull over as far left as you can. These trucks carry huge loads.
