It’s written for people who want guidance — but also want room to breathe.
Who This Itinerary Is For
This itinerary suits you if:
- This is your first time on the Gibb River Road
- You have around one week, not two
- You want to see iconic places without exhaustion
- You’re happy to skip deeper side tracks this time
If you want to reach every remote corner, this is not the right timeframe. If you want to enjoy the road, it is.
What a 7-Day Gibb Trip Does Well
Seven days work best when you:
- Enter from the eastern or western end and don’t backtrack
- Focus on accessible gorges
- Limit yourself to one or two major activities per day
- Accept that you’re getting a strong introduction, not the whole story
Many people finish this trip already planning a return — which is exactly the point.
Day-by-Day: A Realistic 7-Day Flow
This is guidance, not a rigid plan. Road conditions, heat, and energy levels matter more than ticking boxes.
Day 1: Derby / Birdwood Downs Station → Windjana Gorge area
This first day is about a soft entry onto the Gibb River Road.
- Bitumen driving from Derby until the turn-off to Windjana Gorge
- Corrugated road to Tunnel Creek
- Time to adjust expectations and road conditions
- No pressure to rush or overfill the day
Many travellers spend the afternoon exploring Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek, then camp nearby. There is a campground at Windjana, along with several free camping options in the surrounding area.
Why this works:
It’s a gentle introduction and avoids overloading day one.
Day 2: Windjana Gorge → Bell Gorge (Silent Grove)
This is often one of the most memorable days on the Gibb River Road.
Spend the morning exploring Windjana Gorge, where early light works best for photography. From here, continue east to Bell Gorge, one of the most photographed and rewarding gorges on the route.
Plan for:
- One full gorge experience at Bell Gorge
- Careful heat management
- A short but physical walk, including a river crossing
Do not add extra stops today. Bell Gorge is best enjoyed without rushing.
Overnight options include Silent Grove (closest access) or Imintji, depending on availability and preference.
Day 3: Bell Gorge → Manning Gorge area
Continue east toward the Mount Barnett Roadhouse area.
This can feel like a busy day, so it’s best approached with flexibility rather than obligation. If energy and conditions allow, options stopping at Adcock Gorge and/or Galvans Gorge on the way.
This is a good day to:
- Drive a moderate distance
- Position yourself for the following day
- Keep activities light and optional
Think of this as a positioning day, not a major sightseeing day.
Overnight options include Manning Gorge campground or Barnett River Gorge, depending on timing and availability.
Day 4: Manning Gorge
Manning Gorge is a full commitment day.
Allow time for:
- The river crossing
- The walk into the Gorge
- Swimming and rest
Recommended:
This is a point in the journey where slowing down becomes important. Giving this day the time it deserves helps prevent fatigue later on.
Day 5: Manning Gorge → Home Valley Station
This is a transition day and typically the longest driving day of the trip.
After leaving the Manning Gorge area, continue east. Many travellers stop at Ellenbrae Station for its well-known scones, then push on toward Home Valley Station.
If conditions allow, a short stop to Bindoola Falls, or do it tomorrow. You have options. Ending the day at Home Valley offers the chance to watch the sun set over the Cockburn Range. A highlight of the trip.
Use this day primarily for distance, not destinations.
Expect:
- Longer driving hours
- Fewer stops
- A mental shift toward exiting the Gibb
This day can look quiet on paper, but it’s essential for keeping the journey relaxed and achievable.
Day 6: Home Valley Station → El Questro
Today is a lighter driving day and a chance to slow the pace.
Leave Home Valley Station and head toward El Questro Wilderness Park. This day is best treated as an introduction rather than a full exploration.
Use the time to:
- Set up at your chosen El Questro accommodation or campground
- Familiarise yourself with the area
- Choose one short, accessible activity if energy allows
Think of this as a taster of what El Questro offers, not an attempt to see it all.
Day 7: El Questro → Kununurra (via Emma Gorge)
Begin the day by leaving the main El Questro area. Head to Emma Gorge. It is one of the park’s most well-known and accessible highlights.
After visiting Emma Gorge, continue east toward Kununurra, where services, supplies, and accommodation are readily available.
This final day:
Keeps the trip from ending in a rush
Provides a natural conclusion to the Gibb
Allows time to transition back to sealed roads
What This 7-Day Itinerary Skips (On Purpose)
This timeframe usually does not include:
- Mitchell Falls
- Kalumburu Road

Those belong in a longer trip.
Practical Guidance (What First-Timers Miss)
- Distances look short but take time
